Our World in Data, based on Bourguignon and Morrisson and the World BankHow the Saudi end of service award works
Article 84 of the Saudi Labor Law gives every worker an end of service award based on their last wage, which includes basic pay and fixed allowances such as housing and transport:
- Half a month's wage for each of the first five years.
- A full month's wage for each year after that.
- Part years count pro rata.
If you resign
Article 85 cuts the award when the worker resigns:
- Under 2 years of service: nothing.
- 2 to 5 years: one third.
- 5 to 10 years: two thirds.
- 10 years or more: the full award.
If the employer ends the contract, or a fixed-term contract simply runs out, you get the full award.
Exceptions that give the full award
Article 87 gives the full award if you leave because of force majeure, or if a woman ends her contract within six months of marriage or three months of giving birth.
